Motivation

I like doing friction stir welding for 3D prints, but when I was using the classic model on thingyverse, I could never get the tip on perfectly straight. I decided to do my own model, but instead for the 1/8th collet that comes as standard. This ensures that the tip is always straight.

  • Shank = 1/8 inch (3.175mm)
  • Tip = 3mm

Tips

  1. Hold the tool normal to the surface.
  2. Don't go straight in for a seam, start on one end and warm the tip, you need to get a melt before moving, this takes a second or so.
  3. When joining 2 different materials, the tip needs to be the higher melt point, and you need to melt and bias the higher melt point plastic.
  4. If welding delicate areas, create a melt on the surrounding area, then move it to the point, this saves the delicate part from just wearing out.

Safety

  1. Don't be silly, you're spinning a molten plastic melt, wear goggles.
  2. It also does not taste very nice, keep your mouth closed, I speak from experience.
  3. If welding with ABS or other toxic plastics, do so at least in a well ventilated area.

Printing

  1. 100% infil.
  2. 0.001mm slicing tolerance (ensures the card is not attached to the tips, the card is they're for vertical support) otherwise you will likely need to cut the tip from the card.
