Use professional filters on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. With a satisfying magsafe snap onto your phone, this securely mounts your filters. This uses two commercial parts.
A magsafe mount, and a 58 to 85mm step up adapter. So total price is between $15 and $25 bucks. You can order the magsafe discs from aliexpress for $3.75 but I do not know if they're an exact dimension match.
I saw this great video where DP Journey makes a magsafe ND filter mount. I really loved the idea, but noticed that the filter sticks out a long way unsupported. Which is a little dicey when adjusting your ND, etc. Since I have a 3D printer I thought “I can fix that!”
So I designed this mount that you can glue the magsafe disc/step up adapter into. I've very pleased with the results. Now I don't have to spring for custom ND filters for my phone!
The design prints in 2 parts. A corner that aligns with the top corner of the phone and cups the other side slightly to keep things aligned/in place.
I made two versions. One set that has the two parts put together with short pieces of 1/8" brass tubing (as accents) and another set that has 3D printed pegs. In either case I glue the parts together with thin CA glue. (super glue)
I also glue the magsafe disc into the design with CA glue. Be careful not to put it on your phone before all the CA glue has set, or you'll be scrubbing CA glue off your phone. lol
If you are using this adapter for a variable ND (with flange on it), It's best to not glue in the adapter ring in until you've determined the best orientation for that flange to go.
My print tolerances were close enough that I was able to screw the adapter into the 3D print, without having to glue it in, but you're unlikely to hit those exact dimensions, but it's not really a priority. Better to have it a bit loose and glue it in for added security.
