Description
The original case from Moondrop had an exposed top that offered no protection against losing the earbuds accidentally (while the magnets are strong, the earbuds can still fall out).
I designed a case that is meant to replace the original and it has a print-in-place hinge. It reuses the original magnets and screws that comes with the case.
There are 2 different versions of the cases, one with a latch (with optional 4 x 1mm magnets) and one without a latch (4 x 1mm magnets required) to hold the case closed. Also, each version comes with 2 different aesthetics to choose from (either with the Moondrop logo or Space Travel logo).
Additionally for the Space Travel version, it comes with an optional colour plate that you can choose to print in a different colour to provide an alternate background colour that you can insert behind the top lid to provide a contrasty look.
I would love to hear your comments on the case and see your builds with this!
Printing Notes
There are several important points to note for printing this:
- Due to the print-in-place hinge, it is highly recommended to print in 0.1mm layer height (first layer can be 0.2mm). I did not have good results when printing with 0.2mm height.
- There is a build-in support layer that must be removed before assembly to the case. Use a screwdriver or some other tool to push the support layer out through the 2 square holes (where the earbuds are supposed to sit on the charger).
- I recommend to turn on ironing (if your slicer supports it). This should allows the built-in support layer to be more easily removed. This will make the interior of the case look nicer too.
- PLA is recommended due to the thin walls and hinge. Other materials may warp particularly at the hinge or exhibit layer separation at the thin wall. I tried printing in PETG, it kind of worked but wasn't as nice as PLA (the case cannot close flat like the PLA version). I did not try ABS/ASA.
Assembly Notes
Some pointers to note when assembly the case:
- You will need to reuse the 2 screws and 2 magnets that comes with the original case for the assembly.
- Do not overtighten the screws! The plastic screw threads looks pretty fragile. I take no responsibility if you strip the screw threads!
- For the 2 optional round magnets to close the case close, they are meant to be friction-fitted. If they are too loose, you may need a dab of glue to hold them in place. If they are too tight, try to use a tool to slightly widen the hole.
- For the Space Travel version, the additional 0.4mm plate is optional. If you choose to print it, it is recommended to choose a different colour. They are friction-fitted behind the lid. There are 8 tiny latches that should hold them in place, make sure you press-fit them behind the latch!
