Suet Ball holder for Bird Buddy.  No supports required!

I designed this suet ball feeder to have several important features:

  • Tough--birds can be pretty rough when they are going after food, and I wanted something that would hold up to their enthusiasm.
  • Large enough to hold a 60mm suet ball.  The original holder wasn't quite large enough for me.  This version will hold premade suet balls from "Wildlife Sciences" quite comfortably.
  • No need for supports.
  • Easy to refill.

Hopefully I have succeeded.

Attach the suet ball to the feeder with an ~15mm long M5 screw or bolt. You have some wiggle room on the length.  If you don't have the right part already, consider picking up a cheap assortment box from Amazon.

I'd love to see your suet ball in action, so don't forget to upload your make! Thank you.

Printing Notes:

I have printed this model in both PETG and PLA with both .4 and .6mm nozzles, in both cases using a 0.2mm layer height.  I recommend PETG because I find it holds up a little better outdoors, but honestly use whatever you have on hand.  In my photos, the blue holder was printed in PETG and the yellow holder was printed in PLA.

While this model does not need supports, it does challenge your printer's ability to print overhangs, so you may need to carefully tune your settings.  My prints so far all have worked, but get a little sloppy in places.  If you get a nice print, please share your settings!
