Description

Leela is a free 3D printable sensor housing intended to be used with Home Assistant and ESPHome. She can be described as a "room sensor" with the primary sensors being motion, temperature and humidity. The data from these sensors can be very useful in Home Assistant and of course can be used to power automations such as turning on/off lights, heating, extractor fans... and all the other amazing things HA can do!

You can checkout a video demonstrating the design on YouTube here.

A free version of Leela is available on Printables HERE that includes a simple flat base. I encourage you to download it and try it before purchasing Leela+ !  If you find you like it, want to have more flexibility in where the motion sensor points, or want to wall mount it you can purchase Leela+ which includes the pivot base and wall mount.

Leela is designed to be:

1. Simple to print and setup.
2. Provide reliable and accurate data
3. Be modular and compatible with a wide range of readily availble ESP boards and sensors
4. Offer value for money that cannot be matched by off the shelf branded products
5. Pass "The Wife Test" and not look like a piece of garbage stuck together with Ducktape and Hot Glue.

To expand on these points...

The entire enclosure can be printed in one go on a Prusa i3 sized printer (and probably smaller) but is split into three separate files for flexibility (print front and back in contrasting colours for instance) The free version of Leela with simple stand only uses 69g of filament while Leela+ which includes the pivot base and wall mount only adds another 40g.

The only hardware required is the electronics as Leela assembles without any screws and needs just a tiny bit of superglue with the pivot base/wall mount included with Leela+.

Leela is launching with support for two commonly used ESP boards:

  • Wemos D1 Mini (ESP8266 clone variant pictured with MicroUSB or USB-C)
  • ESP32 C3 Supermini

Support for the following ESP boards is currently being tested:

  • ESP32 Wemos D1 Mini
  • ESP32 S2 Mini

A STEP file for the modular ESP mounting board will also be added in due course allowing you to create a mount for your own ESP board if not already supported (full size ESP boards are currently too large but a modified larger enclosure may follow if demanded!)

The initial two sensors supported have been tested extensively, they are:

  • HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor
  • BME280 Temperature/Humidity Sensor

YAML files for their setup can be downloaded from the Other Files section.

Support for the following sensors is currently in testing:

  • LD2410C mmWave Presence Sensor
  • BH1750 - Lux/Light Sensor
  • AM312 PIR Sensor motion Sensor
  • AHT10 Temperature/Humidity Sensor
  • BME680 Temperature/Humidity/Air Quality Sensor

Assuming you have a spare USB power supply and USB cable laying around, the cost for electronics within this initial version of Leela can be as low as 5 Dollars/Euros/Pounds (even lower with a future temperature sensor) Factoring in the cost of filament used to print Leela and the total cost of assembly can be under 7 Dollars/Euros/Pounds.

Leela doesn't look like junk and should look at home on a shelf or mounted to a wall. The design should ensure you will still get snu snu if you have a significant other.

Please read the Release Notes file which in the files section before beginning to print Leela, it's a 5 minute read but contains lots of useful info!
