Introducing the Clicky Life Counter, a compact and versatile 12-sided level or life counter meticulously designed to enhance your gaming experience, particularly suited for games where counting to 10 is crucial, such as Munchkin. This handy device features the numbers 0-9, an asterisk (*), and a blank space, providing flexibility for various gaming scenarios. Beyond its gaming utility, it also serves as an engaging fidget toy, keeping your fingers occupied during moments of contemplation.

Features:

Colorful Customization: Personalize your Clicky Life Counter by printing a vibrant assortment of Top and Bottom parts. Mix and match colors to suit your preferences and switch them effortlessly.

Spring Options: Choose between a traditional metal spring or a 3D-printed alternative. A 6-7mm (~1/4") diameter spring with a length of 7-11mm (9-13/32") is recommended. While the printed spring is fully functional, it may lack the tactile and acoustic qualities of its metal counterpart.

Printing Instructions:

Layer Height and Infill: Print each part at 0.2mm layer height with a 15% infill. For optimal results, use a "0.2mm Quality" profile, as the Input Shaper on threads may pose challenges.

Color Switching: The model supports manual color switching by pausing the print at specific layers. Alternatively, print in a single color and use permanent markers for a customized finish.

Nozzle Size: Tested with a 0.4mm nozzle; larger nozzles may pose challenges in fine structures. If experimenting with larger nozzles, kindly share your experience for future updates.

Assembly

  1. Place the spring into the top part, either using the single-piece printed spring or the spring head with a metal spring.
  2. Put the Top on the Bottom part
  3. If available, apply a small drop of oil to the thread for smoother operation.
  4. Fasten the screw until flush using a 1-Cent coin (other thin coins may also work).

Inspiration and Design

The Clicky Life Counter was crafted from scratch using Tinkercad, drawing inspiration from KidSwiddens' 12 Click Life Counter (Thingiverse: link).

Diverging from the original design, our goals were to:

  • Reduce Size and Material Usage: Significantly decrease print time and material consumption without compromising functionality.
  • One-Handed Operation: Enable one-handed usage with minimal training required.
  • Enhanced Stability: Ensure a secure fit of the top part while maintaining even distribution of the numbers.
  • Support-Free Printing: Facilitate easy and support-free printing for a hassle-free experience.

While preserving the numbering and clicking mechanics inspired by KidSwiddens, the Clicky Life Counter aims to be a compact, efficient, and user-friendly addition to your gaming essentials. Feel free to provide feedback for continuous improvement.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

V2 of my nearly 4 year old design. Now its fully printable: It supports and includes a printable spring instead of only relying on a metal spring.

Additional changes:

  • slightly thicker top for a better finish and to support entry-level printers
  • more open license
