Description

PDF

A set of thickness gauges, specifically for determining the action on a guitar. There are two variants (generated from the same parametric model):

  1. Five gauges running from 2.5 mm to 4.5 mm, with a 0.5 mm step size.
  2. Six gauges running from 2.0 mm to 4.5 mm, with a 0.5 mm step size.

The "action" of a guitar is the distance of the top of the fret and the bottom of the string, measured at the 12th fret. The optimal action depends on the guitar and the strings. Guidelines are:

  1. Nylon-string (classical guitar): 3 mm at the treble E-string and between 3.5 and 4 mm at the bass E-string.
  2. Steel-string guitar: 2.5 mm at the treble E-string and roughly 3.5 at the bass E-string

Printing

This model should be printed with a low layer height to get the best accuracy. You may want to look at variable layer height, prioritizing quality.

A colour change at the top layer improves readability of the labels.

Customization

The design is adjustable with the OpenSCAD customizer: the number of gauges, the start and end thicknesses, the step size for consecutive gauges, and other dimensions can all be adjusted.
