This wand is printed in 5 pieces and screwed together. There are 2 versions of the middle piece, one with runes inscribed on it and one blank for custom inscription/painting. I actually made this model in 2018, but just now got around to uploading it.
Design:
I really liked the look of the wands by Sancharizard and jakereeves so started with these as a base in Meshmixer.
I also liked the concept of splitting the wand into multiple small parts with a core as done by kspring (I had a very small Monoprice Select Mini at the time), so I split the model at several points that blend in a little better.
Uploaded the separate pieces into Tinkercad where I added threads and removed the core from the middle piece.
I also designed some "staining stands" to make staining/finished the wood pieces easier.
Printing
As pictured, these are printed with following materials:
This was mostly printed on a Monoprice Select Mini using a 0.4 mm nozzle, though I more recently reprinted a piece (that I broke when sanding) on a Prusa MK4 with a 0.5 mm nozzle. I highly recommend a 0.5 mm nozzle as I had a lot of problems with the 0.4 mm nozzle clogging when using wood PLA.
Wood parts were printed at slower speed (a woodfill preset) and only one part at a time since wood PLA oozes a lot. All parts printed with 3 walls, 95% infill (rectilinear), 0.1 mm layer height, no supports.
Post Processing
Wood pieces were sanded with 220 grit sand paper, roughly perpendicular to the layer lines, until layer lines were hard to see or not visible at all. Parts were rinsed under water and brushed to removed any dust., then air dried.
Attached the wand parts onto “stain stands” I designed and printed with white PLA
Generously applied wood stain with a foam brush, let sit for 3-5 minutes, then wiped/dabbed dry with a paper towel to remove excess stain. Air dried overnight. I used Varathane Dark Walnut Premium Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain (oil-based).
Painted a white band with white acrylic paint (3 coats), then painted the runes on top black paint pen. I accidentally used an oil-based paint pen, which started to run a bit when I applied the polyurethane coat, but I just applied it quickly and it turned out ok. I recommend use a black paint/paint pen that is not oil based to avoid this.
Applied 3 coats polyurethane finish using a small multi-purpose synthetic paint brush meant for acrylic paint. Painted the polyurethane on carefully to avoid creating bubbles, allowing it to dry 4-12 hours between coats. The polyurethane gave a yellow tint to the white painted band, which I like since it sort of makes it look aged. I used Varathane Clear Satin Oil-Based Interior Polyurethane
