Why Would I Want one of These?

This perch supports the weight of the horn on the edge of your chair, which allows you to play it without stressing your neck or your right thumb.

Will this fit me?

This model holds the base of the horn about 6mm above the butt of the chair. You can check if this is a good height for you by playing with your horn resting on a 6mm (quarter inch) thick book under it.

Do I Still Have to use a Neck Strap?

While you can technically play using this perch and no neck strap at all, you may still find a neck strap useful as an anchor for playing up in the palm keys where there are few fingers in contact with the horn. A neck strap is also good insurance toward keeping the horn off the floor.

What is the Blue Stuff in the Middle?

The blue felt in the middle protects your horn's lacquer from abrasion and keeps the horn from moving laterally.

Will this Ruin my Chair?

That depends on your definition of ruin. You will need to drill two small holes in the front of the lip of the chair. This is a mostly out-of-sight location for the holes. If you decide to give up the alto saxophone later, you can fill the holes with wood putty and probably nobody will notice. Also notice the thin grey fabric in one of the photos, intended to protect the finish of the chair seat.

Why is it Asymmetrical?

You may have noticed a ski slope embedded in this design. If you look at your alto saxophone, you will notice that when you hold the body straight ahead, the bell points off to the left. The asymmetry is both to guide the user in how to align the horn, as well as for aesthetic beauty.

What is the Shape of the Dish, Exactly?

The bow of the alto saxophone rests in a spherical dish of radius 65mm.
