While loving the design of Paul Ds flower pot, i needed a version to

  • print without supports
  • reduce filament use since my application is just a cover for plant pots with low requirements regarding structural strength
  • resize non proportionally to fit a claimed “12cm planter” that actually is 14cm diameter on the outside.
  • New version added for 15cm wide and 10cm high planters.

Model origin

The author remixed this model.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

Optimization

  • Minimized thickness to 3 perimeters at 0.4mm width.
As a cover pot, it does not need to be watertight or strong enough to hold soil and the plant itself. This remix is just meant as a cover for flower planters/pots. Vase mode was to thin imo. The sweet-spot i found is 1.2mm wall thickness to not appear cheap and wobbly but still reduce the material use to a minimum.
  • Reduced bottom thickness to 4mm to safe filament
  • Removed 90° overhang to make support-less print possible
  • Print time reduce by >50% due to much less material use
  • Filament use reduced by 28%, from 219g for the original model scaled to 150mm diameter x 134mm outer size at 15% infill, versus this remix with 156g.

Regression

  • Lost the attractive shadow gap that offsets the pot from the ground it is placed on in favor for support-less print
  • Structural stability is way worse than the original. It is just a cover now.
  • Intense backlight might reveal the silhouette of the top cover pot due to only 1.2mm wall thickness. Usually not a problem indoors and when using dark filament.
