Adapter to mount the Smart Orbiter v3.0 extruder to any 3D-printer-printer that utilizes the E3D style tool changer system/mounting plate. Furthermore, this design allows to reuse the Duet3D toolboard (Duet 3 Toolboard 1LC, latest revision).

This design doesn't include a fan duct and mount as they are mounted to the extruder directly. Feel free to use any of the existing fan mounts & ducts for the Orbiter v3.

Design decisions

The dock-pins are in the same position as they are with the stock E3D v6 setup. This means the docking port on the printer frame can stay without modifications. Further, the tooltool head dimension is roughly equal to that of a E3D Hemera (XS Revo) or E3D V6 setup as such there shouldn't be any clearance issues with neighboring tool heads.

This decision on the other hand forced a design where the center of gravity doesn't match the the center of the toolplate. As the extruder motor is already extending slightly past the toolplate dimension the decision was taken to place the Duet3D 1LC toolboard PCB on top of the extruder rather than next to the motor backside.

Luckily there is one position the Duet 1LC PCB fits. The downside is the filament needs to run through one of the mounting holes. Sidenote: There are two revisions of the 1LC with different spacing between the mounting holes. this design only works with the latest revision made for the E3D Hemera XS. Older toolboards with mounting holes for the E3D Hemera won't fit.

The holes in the crossbar of the dock pin receiver have holes and can be used to mount additional parts/addons if required (M3 screw directly in plastic or zip ties).

The aluminum tool plate is screwed directly into the printed plastic part (2.8mm hole for M3). The strength of such a joint is very similar to a brass insert.

For strain relief, there is a triangular shape. Use a zip tie to fixture the CAN-Bus cable to it.

On top of the cable strain relief there is a slot for the 5mm width steel band. To fixture it push it in (\"thickness\"/height gets smaller toward the bottom of the hole/slot).
