This project was born out of two needs. The first is that I wanted an air purifier for my desk at work. The second need was an air purifier for when we're carpooling out to the mountains to go skiing. Sitting on my desk and blowing clear air straight at my face means it doesn't have to move a TON of air - same with the confined space of a car. I have much bigger filters I use for home and for cleaning larger volumes of air.
I have NOT done any formal testing on this device and make no guarantees as to it's working. It seems to work for me but your mileage may vary. When in doubt, buy something properly engineered and tested.
Required Supplies
- 140mm PC Fan - you want the highest static pressure fan you can find - I'm currently using the Arctic P14, but have a Noctua Noctua NF-A14 iPPC-3000 on the way which should be a fair bit more effective.
- 4 x M4 50mm machine screws
- 4 x M4 nuts
- 8 x M4 washers
- 1 USB 12V fan cable like this: https://amzn.to/47bnGqN
- 1 Rigid VF3600 filter (I got mine from Home Depot, this is an Amazon knock-off https://amzn.to/3Rv61V7)
Instructions
- Print one of each part (Core, Base, and Fan Cage)
- Install the filter onto the core. The gasket on the open side of the filter fits into the taper of large end of the core. The threaded post pushes through the bottom hole of the filter.
- Screw on the base. One side has a raised bit in the middle - this side goes up against the filter to minimize air leakage.
- Place the fan onto the core. With the base on a flat surface, sit the fan on top of the core with the mounting holes lined up.
- Place the fan cage over the fan. The cage is currently sized for a 27mm thick fan like my P14. The holes for the fan cage, the fan, and the core should all line up.
- Drop a machine screw through a washer and then the sandwich of the fan cage, fan, and core. Secure with a nut and washer from the under side. Repeat for the remaining three screws.
- Plug the fan in, marvel at your little filter and pat yourself on the back.
