If Root gets more expansions, I'll return and update my design to include those.
Uhh, yeah, I backed the Homeland Expansion, so rest assured I'll start working on an update to accomodate the new factions as soon as I get them!
----
Two things you should know about me: 1. I like cute woodland animals 2. I'm impatient.
Normally I wait until I own all the expansions for a game before I start on measuring and designing an insert, and while I couldn't wait any longer to start on Root, I do think we are due for one more big expansion! The original game came with 4 factions, and the first Clockwork expansion was for those 4 - then we got the Riverfolk and Underworld expansions, and with them a second Clockwork Expansion plus the Partisans & Exiles deck themed around those 4 new factions.
Now with the Marauder expansion out, we're at 10 main factions - I think it's reasonable to expect one more 2-faction-expansion and with it, a third Clockwork expansion and another alternate card deck!
With that in mind, this organizer is designed to fit the base game of Root plus all the expansions currently out for it, specifically:
and it accomodates sleeved cards (I used Arcane Tinmen sleeves). If you don't have all these expansions yet, this organizer works pretty well in a print-as-you-need fashion! However, this organizer is really intended for the completionist, and if you don't plan on getting more than one of the big-box expansions, it won't serve you very well at all and I recommend looking at some of the other organizers out there.
Here is how I suggest organizing your copy of Root:
Base Game Box - Main Factions - each piece holds all the faction-specific tokens and cards of each faction, and can fit (with some effort) the GeekUp bags if you have them. When a player chooses a faction, they can take the holder for that faction and have every token and pawn at hand right away. Print the following as needed:
main_alliance_badgers.stl
main_birds.stl
main_cats.stl
main_crows.stl
main_lizards.stl
main_moles.stl
main_otters.stl
main_rats.stl
main_vagabond.stl
- note this piece only holds tokens for a single Vagabond playermain_spacer_optional.stl
- optional, there are 10 factions currently out which leaves two empty spaces for a predicted future expansion, these spacers can be used to fill those empty spots (or those of any other faction you might be missing) during the wait, but are not necessary
Expansion Box - Manuals and Faction Boards
Expansion Box - Map Box - holds the Summer/Winter and Lake/Mountain boards, clearing tokens, ruins tiles, and tunnel pieces.
map_clearning_cardboard.stl
- holds the cardboard clearing tokensmap_clearning_resin_x3.stl
- one will hold four resin clearing tokens of one colormap_tunnels_x2.stl
- holds 3 tunnel pieces and serves to help lift the maps out of the boxmap_ruins.stl
- holds the 4 ruins tokensI printed lumberjackdiz's Root Board Game Magnetic Items Holder and highly recommend it, I keep it in this box with the maps and clearning markers.
Expansion Box - Miscellaneous Box - Holds Dice, card decks, and tokens necessary for a second Vagabond player. Also has space for the wooden card holders if you have them
misc_cards.stl
- 1 minimum, 2 if you have the Exiles & Partisans deck. I believe a 3rd deck will be released eventually, print a third one when that happens.misc_dice.stl
- 1 minimum, 2 if you have the black dice from the Underworld expansion. 3 will fit on the short edge of a box, but I'm not sure Leder Games will release more dice so a third might be unnecessarymisc_vagabond_extras.stl
- holds tokens for a second Vagabond player.
Hirelings Box - Holds Hirelings and Landmarks, there's space for two more hirelings animals but I'm not sure if more will be released
hirelings_animals.stl
- holds hirelings, there is space for 8 but only 6 currently in use, hopefully the remaining two will be filled in a future expansionhirelings_badgers.stl
- badger pawns plus Vault Building tokenshirelings_base.stl
- hireling cards, end-of-turn markers, and hireling control markershirelings_bear_stag_otters.stl
- Exile, Flotilla, and Protector paws, plus Club tokenshirelings_bunnies_hedgehogs.stl
- in one of these I put the bunny pawns plus Uprising die, and in the second one I pair the hedgehog pawns and the Hireling Control diehirelings_landmarks.stl
- landmark cards and pawnshirelings_moles.stl
- mole pawns plus Foothold tokens
If Root gets more expansions, I'll return and update my design to include those. Leder Games has said they will not be releasing a “big box” to hold all the Root expansions once the game is complete, but even if they change their mind I don't think I'll get it, the expansion boxes are too charming to throw away.
Stay safe woodland warriors

By the way, I'm just going to put this out into the universe:
If someone were to make felt versions of all the tokens in Root, I would unironically pay like $800 for it, I'm not even exaggerating. All of the round and square tokens, as pieces of felt instead of cardboard. Goodness, if the token icons were embroidered, I would fork over unreasonable amounts of money for that.
The author marked this model as their own original creation.
