I upgraded my Original Prusa MK2s with the fabulous Full Bear Upgrade and was in need of a new spool holder. As the upgrade consists of aluminum extrusions/profiles, attaching a spool holder to these profiles seemed to be the logical step. However, I wanted an easy and simple solution without lots of parts that could fit a wide range of spools.

So here it is, my simple spool holder for a majority of filament spool sizes!

I divided the spool holder into the aluminum extrusion mount with a 16mm inner threaded hole and the spool holder handle. This way one can exchange the handle with other gear like broader/narrower, longer/shorter handles, camera mounts and so on.

The only other parts needed are two M5 t-nuts and two M5x10 screws. I provide affiliate links to these parts down below.

Please read my print settings recommendations down below.

Your opinion on this design and suggestions to make it even better is appreciated

Print instructions

  • Printer Brand: Prusa Research
  • Printer: Mk2.5s
  • Rafts: No
  • Supports: No
  • Resolution: 0.20 mm
  • Infill: 25% Gyroid
  • Filament: Das Filament PETG Black

Aluminum Extrusion Mount:

Print it with the side that goes towards the aluminum extrusion flat on the print bed (see screenshot!). Use supports for the mount to get the bed facing side printed properly. As this surface will be pressed against the extrusion, the imperfections caused by the supports are not that important.
However, it is more important to print the inner threading vertically to provide good mechanical properties of the threading.

Spool Holder Handle:

Place it vertically on the print bed with the outer threading on the top.

Use four perimeters for the print to get precise and stable threading.
I used 10% infill to get enough support structure for the perimeters of the outer threading.
If your slicing application can provide selective infill densities, you can print the remaining object below the thread with a lower infill density.

Important

Please use the same layer height setting for both objects, as mixing layer heights can have a negative impact on the thread fit.

Post-Printing

Greasing the threads

Use some PTFE grease on the threads for better mechanical properties, easier threading and less wear on the threads.

I provided a link to the grease I use in the project's description above.
