Decorative rims for round pet ID discs / tags

  • Customisable dimensions, shape and decoration : simply measure your disc and input the relevant parameters.

  • Not only decorative, these also have a practical noise-reducing function due to the plastic rim and the hole-lining feature : stop walking like a jailer, alerting all those pigeons and squirrels before you're even close!

Parameters

  • To edit parameters in FreeCAD look for the spreadsheet inside the model tree.

  • Some combinations of parameters won't work. I've put in limits which mean that one or more parameters may be unfulfilled if they'd clash. Nevertheless it's possible for the geometry to break : Look out for red exclamation marks in the model tree
Also a sudden large change in a parameter might cause the sketch geometry to fail. Try changing it in smaller steps if this happens, or change the parameters in a different sequence.

  • Note that on FreeCAD, if the model fails to build then the 3D image will still show the previous ‘good’ geometry.

  • Sometimes a model tree failure will resolve once all changes are complete, if they represent a valid definition.
At other times restoring the old values will un-fail the model.
But there are unfortunate times when it goes FUBAR and you'll need to revert to a saved model or fresh download.

  • The “Decoration” parameters refer to the textured pattern. This can be slow to build and prone to failure - sorry! You can switch it off by setting Xz = 0 which helps somewhat.
What tends to make it fail is when the quantity of wiggles per line (Xn), or the wiggle amplitude (Xp) become large in relation to the line width (Xw), which can lead to kinking of the geometry. The model tree might sometimes not report this as a fail, but the surface geometry could be  invalid for export nonetheless:

Another quirk is that the wiggly spline sketch (named Wavy_Path) sometimes needs an extra regen in order to attain its correct shape, especially if you've modified the overall diameter of the item (parameters D, B). Right-click and mark it to recompute, then hit the blue regen button (or F5).

Printing

  • Print with the decorative face down, avoiding brim or raft if possible as these can mar the appearance.

Finishing

  • A permanent marker will enhance the pattern, using the side of the nib to colour only the raised areas.

  • An ink roller might work too, although I've not tried it.
