Description

PDF

Lightweight personal flotation device.  The outer diameter is 24".  Seven segments.

At 20% infill using LW-PLA by ColorFabb, the core of the ring will weigh around 1.3kg (2.9 lbs).  After lamination and paint, it will likely be around 1.5kg (3.3lbs) — about the same weight as plastic life rings.

Please make sure you know what you're doing if building one, as it may be not compliant with certain laws, regulations, and you might simply drown along with it if built wrong.

Printing

The model itself represents the core of the buoy.  It later needs to be completely encapsulated inside of a composite matrix (such as epoxy resin and carbon fiber), then painted over with bright yellow or orange UV-protective paint (optionally glow-in-the-dark).

Segments need to contain at least one layer of bi-axial composite laminate between them before glued together (to ensure strength and survivability of the ring if one or more of the segments gets damaged).
