The Tha Phae Gate is a landmark of the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. It was originally built in the 13th century along with the square-shaped city wall and moat as a protective measure. Since then, most of the wall is in ruins but the gate has been preserved. It stands as the entrance to the Old town from the eastern side.
Today it is a gathering point for tourists, shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels, with may street performers and food stands around it.
