This is the hook for the trap door latch on the storage compartment between the driver and passenger seats on the back "wall" of the convertible (roadster) model of the Audi TT MK1. There is just no good name for this compartment… it has many nicknames:  flappy door, the “it won't stay closed” door, or rear center glove compartment.

Bottom line is that it cost $115 for the parts to fix it if the clip breaks which is is fairly common. This model is the latch that can be installed with no modification to the door.

Printing Advice:

I did choose to use PETG (over PLA) because it's flexible and less brittle. It also does not deform over time with constant load (and this part will face constant load).

Regarding how you slide it and build your layers - print it on the side so that you have strength along the full length of the part.

To install:

  • If the existing clip broke, then finish breaking it off and smooth the location with an exact knife.  Be careful and only take thin layers of plastic at a time. This clip mounts in the hole that is already there, and covers the location of the old latch.
  • Do a test fit of this print in the door with no glue.  It should fit in the hole, press and lock, then press to unlock.  When it unlocks mine when flying (because the latch is spring loaded) but overall the test should be successful before moving to the next step.
  • Put a dab of Plastic Epoxy (I chose black JB Weld Plastic Weld), mix it throughly. Once it's a little tacky - put a small amount on the edges of the door in the slot and in the location of the removed latch.  It doesn't take much.
  • Install the latch in the hole, press and hold for a minute or so. The lip on the latch should hold it in place and give it 24 hours to dry.

Overall I was very happy with this design because once it's installed, it looks 100% original and required no cutting or drilling (just removal of the broken clip).
