Here's a few reasons why you may NOT want to 3D print your own shims, can you think of any more?
- Dimensional accuracy of shop-bought shims is better (do I care?)
- Shop-bought shims are about 2% cheaper. Last year they were about 30% cheaper (cost for shop-bought shims has increased hugely over last 18 months), maybe the cost of retail versions may come down again?
- Might not have enough filament colours to ensure different thicknesses are printed in different colours? (Quite a handy feature when grabbing them out of a box)
- You don't have to wait for the 3D print to finish (although you do have to sit in traffic if you need it today…)
Apart from that, I think this is a good idea. And you can have them any width, length, or thickness you desire.
Feel free to agree / disagree :)
Printing instructions
- I print with 0.6 nozzle and 0.4 layer height, but anything will work
- Optionally remove skirt - I prefer to do this to save time and my prints don't lift. The design is not subject to warp
- Print in PETG because it's more flexible
- Set perimeters to 1 - reduces print time without changing strength
