Design:

I started from the https://www.printables.com/model/190380-print-in-place-boxes designed by Vidar

I sized the box using Fusion 360 parameters from the original model and design an insert for the drills bits.

With thickness set to 1.8mm, the box is a bit flexible. 2mm will be more rigid. 1.6mm definitely too flexible

What is interesting with a separate insert is that if you need to add other drill bits, it is possible to modify just the insert without having to print a new box. More if we don't need it to store drill bits we can reuse the box for something else.

The insert fits exactly the box (0.2mm offset) and can be removed, replaced if needed

The insert includes a hollowed out part to more easily pull out the drill bits

There is enough space in the lid to put a piece of foam to avoid drill bits moving inside the bow

I also add an engraved text on the top of the lid to identify the box

Printing:

Nothing special for printing but only the insert can be printed on a Prusa MINI+. The box is to big so I printed it on a MK3S+

I used Prusament PLA Pineapple Yellow for the insert and Prusament PETG Jet Black for the box. I printed with 0.4mm nozzle and 0.20mm layer height with PrusaSlicer standard parameters. I used 5% infill for the insert no need for higher value. PLA would works as well for the box but may a bit rigid mainly for the latch.

Gridfinity:

I also designed a Gridfinity compatible storage for the drill bits. It fits a 4x3 slots frame with ½ hight

I started from Fusion 360 Gridfinity template. The design is parametric and you can choose the size of the box as you want

Note that I didn't print these Gridfinity versions as I don't use this system yet. But should be easy to print as it's a simple model. I share it here just for the “Gridfinity fans” who I think are many

On top of .stl and .3mf files, I uploaded Fusion 360 .f3d file so you can modify the design and adapt it to your needs

As usual, feedback and comments (and for sure "likes") will be always welcome. Feel free to post nice pictures of your makes

Enjoy
