I downloaded a Chinese Puzzle Ball and printed it which required the slicer to add the supports.  After hours of effort trying to remove the plug and the supports, I decided there must be a better way!

One variation comes in a case you can give someone as a surprise and the other variation prints on a plate.

If you are printing it with silk filament, print it slowly and hot to ensure maximum layer adhesion. I am using a .4mm nozzle and a .21 mm layer height at 215C and a max speed of 35mm/sec with the Hello PLA silk filament. On the reel, it says 30-45 mm/sec. I have printed it faster with other filaments. When I printed it faster with this filament it cracked mid-print.

  1. You will have to let your slicer put it on the platform.
  2. If your slicer wants to repair it, choose ignore. What it is saying it it wants to destroy the designed in support structure and create a mass under it that will not detach.
  3. When you hit print again it may claim it's not on the platform but if you look you can see it is on the platform so go ahead and print it! Just watch the first layer to make sure it is going on the platform.
  4. After it is printed and if you printed the R2D2 variation the person opening it will need a pair of pliers, cutters, strong tweezers, or killer fingernails to pull the supports out. It is best after the R2D2 shell is removed to put a finger in the top hole to keep the ball aligned. Kind of like sticking your finger in your belly button. Then twist and pull on the ball to remove it from the platform. Finally, use the selected instrument(s) to pull the support rings from the balls. It takes less time to remove the supports than the time to read this.

HAVE FUN!
