Ever since I learned about kit cards I wanted to make one of my own. I tried to fuse my love of traditional Japanese woodwork and joinery with the art of 3D printing and create a relatively flat kit that allows you to build and snap together your own Torii gateway in a way very similar to how they are constructed in real life, replete with through mortise and wedge fasteners.

This took about sixteen hours over the course of five days total to design and test, it was pretty tricky nailing down all the tolerances so that it would be easy to assemble while staying solid and sturdily together by friction alone. This is what took the most time in the design process.

I also created a video showing step by step how to put it together. At the end of the process I used a rubber mallet to hammer down all the parts that were not perfectly joined and it worked like a charm. I was actually amazed by how much force it could endure. I'd guess at least 20 pounds on top of each support column and the arch. So don't be afraid to really whack it.

It takes about 2.5 hours to print and uses 65 grams of filament. HIGHLY recommended you print with BRIM.

Update: Fixed a few minor flaws in the traces and added four new pieces to the model. These are plugs that you can use to fill the slots in the two main support beams. This allows you to make a standard two pier Torii gate. The newer model title is: 2023-11-12-17-30-Japanese-Torii-Kit-Card.

As always I really appreciate your support, and I plan on continuing to release all of my designs under the public domain in accord with my principles. If you feel that my work brings you joy and is worth a small donation I would be very grateful. Every contribution makes a real difference to me financially.
