Jeep Grand Cherokee's often have a small issue with the material around the cup holder. This trim is coated in chrome and becomes very sharp when it peels; damaging or at least marking whatever is placed in the cup holder.

This part would be in part number 11 in the second diagram. Sadly this part is not often found in stock and when it is in stock it's quite expensive.

Luckily the process of accessing and replacing this part is not complicated

  • Remove the gear shift knob, the plastic cover under it pulls up
  • Open the center console and gently pull up and pivot forward
  • Remove the electrical connection from the cup holder
  • Use a screwdriver to remove the cup holder and the defective trim part is now accessible

Along with the .3mf file that includes the printable part,

I've also included the original 3D scans made at the University of Michigan DC Fabrication Underground using a NextEngine Commerical laser 3D Scanner which was necessary for modeling a part with this kind of geometry.

While this is more of a niche part I believe it perfectly shows the amazing value of at-home 3D printers and additive manufacturing in general.

When you print this part at home you are entirely skipping out on Corporate inventory issues, wasteful shipping processes, and excessively high prices.

To complete this personal project was a matter of principle for me and I think reflects the idea of the 3D Printing community (and Prusa Research) that everything can be fixed!
