I had a spare IKEA USB lamp laying around and thought it would be perfect for my Mini!

Please note that while this light draws very little power and there is lots of precedent for tapping power off the Buddy board, I'm not responsible for damage in any way resulting from this mod.

Parts:

Print:

The 3MF file includes paint on supports in the necessary areas already.

Ironing is recommended for a smooth and professional finish on the exterior.

Assembly:

  1. Feed the two conductor wire through the hole and solder the red wire to the switch.
  2. Solder a red jumper wire from the switch to the positive hole in the buck converter.
  3. Solder the black wire to the negative hole in the buck converter.
  4. Feed the USB light through the slot just below the screw hole and plug it into the buck converter.
  5. Nest the light and buck converter into the tray. A small dab of hot glue underneath the buck converter and light will help hold them in place.
  6. Place electrical or Kapton tape over the tray to prevent any electrical contact with the Mini frame.
  7. Use the T nuts and M3 screws to attach the light assembly to the Z-axis.
  8. Make a replacement 24V connector wire between the Buddy board and the Mini power switch. The red wire from the light will tap off the 24V Buddy board power.
  9. The black wire from the light can be grounded to the screw next to the 24V power. I had to trim down a screw terminal to keep it clear from any other components on the Buddy board.
  10. Here's a simple wiring drawing explaining the circuit a bit better:
