I designed this because I was frustrated with the design of the original box inserts for Adbucktion's base game and expansion boxes. The original designs do a great job, but require you to keep the game pieces separated into two boxes, even the 2 additional player boards. I created this part to save space and keep things in one place without losing the nice organization from the original inserts.
This insert fits perfectly inside the base game box and has dedicated slots for each game component:
- Abducktion's signature UFO
- 6 Player boards
- Action cards
- Blue formation cards
- Purple advanced formation cards
- 6 research pods
All the ducks for the game are stored inside the UFO, including the glitter ducks. I've seen some people keep them separated, but if we choose to play without them, we just set them aside whenever we pull them. It's much easier than trying to separate them out for storage.
Printing Instructions:
- As the box is larger than the print area of my printer, I split the model into two parts: the UFO half and the card half. They fit together nicely in the box.
- I printed these parts with no brim (my slicer just loves to add them) and 10% infill.
A few final notes that might answer some questions:
- There is no lid to keep the game pieces in their slots. The insert is at just the right height so that the box lid keeps everything in. While the cards might slide in and out, they haven't come out of the slots, even after some test shaking at different angles.
- The UFO slot is not molded to the UFO like the original insert. That would've been a challenge to get right, and I didn't want to spend the filament on the task when this basic cutout should do fine. While the UFO might move around a bit if the box is shaken, I haven't seen any ducks come out.
- I did test out designs with the insert shelled out. Those designs didn't keep their full rectangle shape, and instead just outlined the slots on the insert without the infill. However, after plugging the shelled and non-shelled versions into my slicer, it turned out that the shelled versions would take more filament and more time to print, a lose-lose (likely due to adding many more walls. I opted to keep the full rectangle shape.
