My somewhat over engineered spool holder

I needed a front mounted spool holder for my machines and this is the result.

Part selection is a result of “what do i have on hand?”.

It's the same type of pins used for the Rama front idlers mod or the “Pin-mod” (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1739093502.html).

You could use either RS/2RS/ZZ bearings, whatever is left from your Voron build.

Printing and Mounting

Supports are needed on the stabilizing tab on the bottom of the bracket.

No other supports needed.
Print with fairly high infill/perimeter count. Im using the default Voron setting:

  • 4 perimeters
  • 40% infill
  • 5 top & bottom

  1. Melt the inserts into the Bracket (2pc) and the Spool bracket (1pc).
  2. Press the bearings into both the Bracket and Spool Bracket (some force should be required since it's a tight fit). Easiest way is to press it against a table.
  3. Place the spool in the Spool Bracket with the flat side against the bearing and push the dowel pin through the bearing and into the spool.
  4. Insert the dowel pin into the bearing on the Bracket and then push the Spool bracket with the spool into place over the Bracket.
  5. Loosly screw in the 6mm buttonheads and the 20mm socket head before tightening.
  6. Mount to printer using M5x16 and the two M5 t-nuts
Caveats

Im using 3mm acrylic panels with 2mm foam tape so there will probably be some extra spacing on a standard machine under the foot “clamp”. I have included a modified version which you should use if you are using the spec 1mm foam tape.

Bill of materials

  • 2pc BHCS M3x6mm
  • 1pc SHCS M3x20mm
  • 2pc BHCS M5x16mm
  • 2pc G6/5mm Dowel pin (20-30mm should do it).
  • 2pc F695 Bearings
  • 3pc M3 Heatsert
  • 2pc M5 T-Nut
