I wanted to 3D print my own Hitbox controller without spending too much on buttons. Instead, I disassembled an old Cherry MX keyboard to salvage its switches and keycaps. To begin, I had to ensure the switches fit correctly, so I printed the test.stl file to verify the switch mounting dimensions (14x14x1.5).

The Pi Pico is secured in place with mounting pins. I left a hole at the back for the cable, although there's no strain relief on it. Perhaps version 2 will include that feature.

To enclose everything, I used 10x2mm magnets. The pocket holes are snug, so no glue was necessary.

Here's what you'll need for this project:

  • 14 Cherry MX switches
  • 14 keycaps
  • 1 Pi Pico + USB cable
  • Up to 16 magnets, maximum size 10x2mm (smaller ones might work as well)
  • Wires and a small amount of soldering
  • Firmware for the Pi Pico: Link

I'm looking to build upon this design, so if you have any suggestions or feedback, please share them with me.
