The  Puzzle

The puzzle consists of 6 puzzle pieces and a slider box.

There are 2 solutions. The puzzle pieces are used on both sides.

3D Printing Tips

The size of the sliding top is crucial. If it's too narrow, the bumps on the top won't snap into place. If it's too wide, the top can usually still be inserted, but it becomes difficult to open.
If the lid is slightly too large, you can start by sanding down the bumps slightly. If the top doesn't fit, it is advisable to adjust its dimensions in the slicer and reprint it. Recommended adjustments are only small increments ranging between approximately 0.2mm and 0.3mm in width (only in width).

Here is a short video explaining this

I printed the puzzle with the following settings:

  • Material: PLA

  • Resolution: 0.2mm

  • Infill: 20%

  • no supports

  • no raft, no brim

Further information about the SnubSquare Polyforms

The SnubSquare grid consists of squares and equilateral triangles, with a ratio of squares to triangles being 1:2.

There are 49 combinations of SnubSquare polyforms consisting of 2 squares and 4 triangles (Figure 1). In 12 out of the 49 polyforms, the squares are separated by 2 triangles (Figure 2), while in the remaining 37, the two squares are connected at one corner.

Ideally, one starts with a complete set of a polyform and tries to find symmetric shapes for a puzzle from it. An example of this is the 12 SnubSquares shown in Figure 2.

Unfortunately, I did not find a corresponding symmetrical shape. Therefore, a shape consisting of 6 SnubSquares was chosen for the 3D printed puzzle.

A zip file is attached, which includes the following:

  • STL files for all 49 SnubSquare puzzle pieces, consisting of 2 squares and 4 triangles.

  • STL files for another SnubSquare puzzle that is challenging to solve, consisting of 12 puzzle pieces with a slider box.

  • Files for the solution program Polysolver, which can also be used to create new shapes for the SnubSquare pieces.

  • Photos and graphics
