Yet Another IKEA Drybox

This is a drybox made from IKEA 10.6 l food storage box. I didn't want to drill more holes than needed, and wanted to use small spools. This mostly ruled out spool stands where the spool is sitting on rollers. Threading the spools on an axle would work, but all designs I found supported the axle on mounts that required drilling through the box. So I decided to make my own.

To make one, you will need four 608 bearings (commonly used in roller skates). No other hardware is needed (except feed-throughs).

This design doesn't include feed-throughs.

The silica gel basket in the photo is an older version the current version's holder is shorter (it was wasting space), allowing me to make the basket wider and smaller, and uses two layers for its slits (that should make it more robust).

 

Printing

All parts are designed to be printed using 0.2 mm layer height. I generally use thicker perimeters (0.5 - 0.6 mm), but ~0.4 mm should be OK too. Consider using brim (even for PLA): the contact surface is small and the parts are quite high.

For the holder itself, PLA is optimal (because of its stiffness), but any common material should work well. I recommend supporting the horizontal struts in the middle, to shorten the bridged span. It is not necessary to support the whole length.

The axle uses 53 mm adapters, these should be printed from softer, springy  material like Tough PLA,  PETG or ABS. Pure PLA might be too hard and fragile; it might be a good idea to heat it up to cca 50 degC to soften it a little and then push it into the spool hole.

The basket can be printed from any common material, PLA is probably optimal. Supports are necessary for the mating hook only; the slits are designed to be bridged.

 

Drawings

The .slvs files are SolveSpace drawings. If you modify them, you might find out the exported .stl contains zero-width faces and similar problems. This is often caused by SolveSpace being confused about what's inside and outside the model. Counterintuitively, you want to export the model using high (0.05 mm) chord tolerance and low piecewise linear segments, to simplify the model and lower the number of error opportunities.
