This is inspired by Layerguru's wire spool collection and Khardix's wire spool, thanks for sending me down this rabbit hole!

I found Layerguru's spools were pretty fragile, and didn't quite work with the lengths of wire I had (spools either too small or big), and I also loved the hexagon pattern of Khardix's spools. So I decided to make a parametric model similar to Layerguru's spools but with the hex pattern modelled in CAD, similar to Khardix's slicer modifier.

I've included the STLs of sizes I'm using, but with this being a parametric model, you can make it any size you like from the CAD model (I'm not sure how robust the "parametricness" of the model is, so any issues please reach out)

You will need a couple of drops of super glue (or your favourite adhesive for 3D prints) to hold the two spool sides together

Notes On Print Settings

  • 4 Perimeters (Makes the hex pattern print better)
  • Increase Hotend Temp (โ‰ˆ+10C) to improve strength (optional)

Tweaking The Parameters

For some reason, printables plays gifs in slow motion :/

The InnerDiameter changes the diameter of the outermost part of the core (where you start wrapping wire around initially

There are some weird fusion things where it doesn't like making chamfers when the inner/outer diameter causes the hexagon pattern to have tiny areas, so you may need to play with the inner/outer diameter value if this happens (I found that +- 1mm of these values often fixes this)
