Motivation

  • Print Quality Optimization: Different filaments have varying ideal temperature ranges for achieving optimal print quality. By printing a temperature tower, you can systematically test a range of temperatures for a specific filament and identify the temperature at which it produces the best results. This allows you to fine-tune your printing settings and achieve higher-quality prints.

  • Filament Compatibility: Filaments from different manufacturers or even different batches can exhibit variations in their temperature requirements. The ultimate temperature tower helps you determine the ideal temperature for a particular filament, ensuring compatibility and reducing the risk of failed or subpar prints.

  • Time and Material Efficiency: Instead of printing multiple test objects or making multiple adjustments to temperature settings during the printing process, a temperature tower allows you to consolidate testing into a single object. This saves time and reduces material waste by providing a comprehensive evaluation of temperature settings in a single print.

  • Overhang and Bridging Performance: Temperature variations can also affect the performance of overhangs and bridging in 3D prints. By systematically testing different temperatures, you can identify the temperature range that yields the best results for these challenging print aspects, improving overall print quality.

  • So many Filaments:

  • Filament Sampler: The model is small, stable, and stackable, making it suitable as a filament sampler/swatch that also documents the influence of printing temperature on the filament. This is very important especially with silk PLA filaments.

Let's get started

Be aware that much to high or much to low temperatures may clog your printers nozzle.

Good way to start is to look at the temp range of your filament spool and than use the test model with that temperature in his name.

The first number is the highest nozzle temp the model uses the second the lowest. s10 is step of 10° while s5 uses steps of 5°.

Analyse the result

If in doubt make a picture of your print and view it magnified. All pictures i published for this model are magnified 6 times. Some filaments like extrudr or prusament often show no visible difference over the whole temperature range given on the spool.

This temp tester gives you information about

  • stringing
  • overhangs
  • bridging
  • fine structures
  • wall surface quality
  • wall shine/bright effect
  • stiffness / strength
  • filament sampler
