This adapter is designed to twist onto a Luer lock equipped syringe that can then be used to backflush a Katadyn BeFree water filter much like you do with a Sawyer water filter.
If you do not own a 3D printer, you can purchase this dohicky from my website at Rex-Creations.com or send the file to other reputable online 3d printing services (though you should made sure they are using TPU material).
Printing: Print from White or Natural TPU (so there are either no additives or just titanium as the additive for color) for food safety reasons.
Orient model tip down on bed, no support, 100% infill, no skirt. Should be an easy print ;)
A Note on Safety: Katadyn makes the BeFree filter, and although they haven't said you shouldn't backflush it, Sawyer (their competitor) claims backflushing a BeFree filter can damage it because the microtubules are not as strong as the Sawyer filters.
While Sawyer hasn't published any evidence to make this claim conclusive, they have shared a study done by Calvin College which finds that the Sawyer Micro Tubular walls are indeed a bit thicker. But I personally like how Ryan Jordan sums up these results in his BPL article written on a similar topic.
"However, because the specific material properties of the fibers are not known, it’s impossible to make the leap from theoretical hoop stress calculation to actual field durability under high backflushing pressures"
In the same article, Ryan sites another study which concludes that the fiber wall thickness variance between common filters on the market may be less of an important figure previously thought and not as big of a deal as Sawyer claims given the relatively low pressure a human can generate during backflushing. The study he sites is linked here.
Because of these reasons, I personally feel safe backflushing my BeFree filter. However I cannot emphasise enough that you must perform your own risk assessment before deciding to get this adapter and use it to backflush your BeFree filters. I accept no responsibility for any damage to your filter of health conditions caused by said damage.
