This is a stronger version of my CR-10 X-Mounted Spool Holder.

The old model worked fine for the past two years. I did have an incident last week with the spool tube snapping on me. The tube snapped under the weight of the spool because I thought it would look really cool printed in silk PLA. Yes, it looked fantastic, however... Layer adhesion with the silk PLA's is lacking, and I print those tubes vertically.

I removed the old model to extract the broken piece of tube from the mount. While the part was intact, I could visibly see that the two hooks at the top of the model that hang on the top bearing of the X gantry were showing signs of fatigue. I decided to add a few structures to strengthen the model while I had it apart, and this is the result.

UPDATE 03072024:  I added a version 3 to alleviate issues I had with supports the last two times I printed this.  I removed the two small diagonal structures opposite the two top hooks so that supports will print straight up to the hooks from flat edges.  Version 3 is otherwise identical to Version 2 and still uses either of the two separate PTFE extenders.

UPDATE 02202024:  I added a version 2 that comes without the filament guide attached and two filament guides “short” and “tall” so that this design will better cooperate with single and dual gear extruders.  The tall piece is intended for dual gear extruders.  Whichever guide best suits your setup should be glued into the cut-out of the base model.  I've been upgrading all my bowden machines to dual gear extruders and the filament path was no-longer a straight shot due to the taller height of the new extruders so I've updated this model to better cope with my hardware changes.

Model origin

The author remixed this model. Imported from Thingiverse.

Differences of the remix compared to the original

Added structures to improve strength.  Separated the filament guide from the base model and made two versions, a tall for dual gear extruders that sit high, and short for the stock extruders.  The filament guides are labeled “PTFE_Extender_Short.stl” and “PTFE_Extender_Tall.stl”.  I print whichever guide I need for whatever machine as oriented in the STL, which is the same orientation they would print were they still attached to the base model.  I print them that way for strength where a short piece of PTFE tube can be pushed through.  If you don't have good bed adhesion, you may want to add a brim.
