Synopsis

An easy to install adapter for AnkerMake M5 printers to allow mounting of the Creality Weighable 3D Digital Spool Rack Filament Holder.

If your slicer accepts the .3mf format, it is highly recommended you utilize that model format into your slicer as it will relay measurement data to your slicer and possibly permit a more accurate print job. Nonetheless, the file size is smaller and more efficient than the commonly used STL file format.

Recommended Print Settings

  • Infill Density - 60%
  • Infill Pattern - Aligned Rectilinear
  • Top & Bottom Layer Amounts - 5 each respectively
  • Layer Height - 0.15mm (recommended) or 0.2mm
  • Perimeters - 5 minimum
  • Seam Position - Rear
  • Ironing - Enabled (not required, but looks aesthetically pleasing)

Parts Required

  • (1) Creality 3D Digital Spool Rack
  • (1) M5x20mm Flat Head screw
    • This is the size of the screw that holds the original spool holder of the AnkerMake M5 to its spool holder bracket. You may reuse that screw, however I would by some spares in case you accidentally snap the screw.

Installation

  1. Uninstall the original spool holder of the AnkerMake M5 (do not remove the bracket part as my adapter will slide over the top part of the bracket).
    • If you currently had the OEM spool holder bracket mounted on the bottom of the left Z-axis column instead of the top of it, then you will need to move the bracket to the top of the column in addition.
  2. After printing my adapter, DO NOT proceed to mounting the adapter right away or you will risk snapping the M5x20mm screw while tightening it and you will not be a happy person. How do I know this? I tried this once and turns out plastic is pretty strong and if the screw is driven too quickly, it'll snap the screw.
    • Instead, using your thumb and index finger, align the screw to the hole and then by using a Hex 3 bit, apply non-excessive downward force while slowly turning the screw in intervals of 3-5 seconds and repeat the interval continuously to drive the screw all the way into the plastic until the flat head of the screw is flush with the wall of the adapter to “prime the screw”. This will assist in butter smooth threading within the plastic and make the screw in the future easier to loosen and tighten. ( :P )! When fully driven, carefully loosen the screw (lefty-loosie, righty-tighty).
  3. It is relatively easy to install my adapter, so let's get to it since you're now ready! Slide the bottom of the adapter over the top part of the bracket that should have remained mounted in the back of your left Z-axis column.
    • The orientation of the adapter is the following:
      • Back of adapter shows screw hole and the wording “The Technical Ace”
      • Front of the adapter has no screw hole or wording, but has a much bigger hole towards the top of the adapter.
  4. With assistance of a Hex 3 bit and your fingers, align the M5x20mm screw into the threaded hole of the adapter and slowly turn the screw in intervals of 3-5 seconds and repeat the interval continuously to drive the screw all the way into the plastic until the flat head of the screw is flush with the wall of the adapter. The adapter is now installed and you will now be able to install your new Creality 3D Digital Spool Rack!
  5. To now install your Creality 3D Digital Spool Rack into my adapter, unlock the locking mechanism that comes pre-locked by turning counter-clockwise and leave the locking mechanism in one of your hands while you proceed to the next step.
  6. Insert the end of the Creality 3D Digital Spool Rack that has the slots for the locking mechanism to connect to and push the spool rack carefully inside paying attention that the Creality logo on the front of the unit is NOT angled or upside down. It should take minimal force (if any) and effort to insert it into the adapter. Once fully inserted, the smaller end of the Creality 3D Digital Spool Rack should be sticking out of the smaller hole of the adapter, allowing for you to easily to now secure the holder with the locking mechanism. Congratulations, you're now done with installation!
