Adding Custom Text: Import the cap object in your slicer, or open the .3mf file. Right click the cap object, and select “Add Negative Volume” > “Text”. I find it easiest to position the text from the top view (View menu on top bar > Top, or 1 on your number pad), and use these settings:

  • Font - This is completely your choice. I like sans-serif fonts, and I use Typograph Pro, Avenir, Din, or Montserrat.
  • Height - Make sure it's small enough to fit comfortably within the cap. See the example photos for reference.
  • Depth - 1 mm is plenty.
  • Advanced - Use Surface checked ✓
  • Char gap & Line gap - if you need the text to spread out or take up less space, but use Height first.
  • Boldness - use to make the font thicker.

Placement: After you add your custom text, select the cap object and place it on the face with the text (upside down from the imported orientation) with the “Place on Face” tool (F).

Filament: ASA in an enclosure recommended (I used a cheap photo tent), but common filaments should work. I tested PLA, PETG, and ASA and was able to print them all with no issue. I used a 0.4mm nozzle on a Prusa Mini+, and can fit 9 caps on one plate.

I recommend doing a filament change after the custom text you add. My favorite combination is White ASA for the top of the cap and the outline of the text, then Black ASA for the rest of the lens cap and background of the text.

Slicer Settings (PrusaSlicer):

  • Skirt and Brim
    • Skirt Loops  = 2 (helps get rid of blobs on filament changes)
    • Skirt Height = 10 layers (or at least a few layers past filament change to help get rid of blobs)
