Naming Convention:

Base: I don't intend to change these files unless a problem arises.

MK.II (Work in Progress):

A complete revision of the gantry and hotend. Intent is an IDEX setup.

MK.I:

Update 4/19/2025:

Never say never… I changed a couple of small things to MK.I to make life a bit easier.

Changes:

I moved the extruder motor to the tool head. It is now a semi direct drive. Using a legit E3D Titan extruder and V6 hotend. Named “BL touch mount V2”

Also fixed the hotend mount and added tabs to prevent the tool head from tilting. “Hotend mount V2”

These files are the first version of MegaTronxy using a bowden tube setup. This path in my view is complete. I do not intend to further modify or add to these files.

Update 2/15/24:

The bowden tube setup is getting old fast. The cheap extruder I switched to just grinds up the filament and jams the tube during long prints. Also, hotend cooling seems adequate but I cannot rule out heat creep. Because of this and overall flex of the gantry system I've decided to revise the entire gantry and hotend system. Going IDEX with Direct Drive E3D Volcanos!

Changes:

as24's cable chain bearing failed on the frame side. The base is just too thin and will fatigue over time. I found another cable chain bearing I liked by GnattyCole looks more robust I've added it to the design.

I added an Octopus/RPi 120mm fan mount for cooling. The Hole in the middle and the Letter were added with Orcaslicer. I cannot seem to import the .STL to add the holes.

Filament spool holder with 608 bearings. I honestly cannot find where I downloaded this model but it works great to aid in smoothing rolling of the filament spool. This was MegaTronxy's first useful print!

Update 10/10/23:

Changes:

Made new Left and Right X-axis brackets. The new version 2 brackets are significantly more robust and resistant to belt tension induced flex. I made the top piece extend over the X-Rail and added a hole to attach the the top piece to the X-rail with a M5bolt and T-nut.

Fused the E3D cold side fan duct to my 5015 Cold side duct.

Update 10/7/23:

Print Material: The hotend parts and fan ducts should be printed with high temp material like ASA, ABS, Nylon. Other parts can use PLA or PETG. Future intent is to enclose the printer. I made everything out of ASA for rigidity and temp resistance.

Plan is to use stock Tronxy parts as much as possible. Still a Bowden tube setup. Big items I wanted to upgrade were:

-MCU

-Hotend

-Glass bed

-Add BLtouch

-Linear Rails

The frame and some wiring is really all that remains of the Tronxy X5. Soldering is recommended for wiring changes.

Various fasteners are required I did not really keep track… have an assortment of M3, M4, and M5 handy but the big ones are:

8x M3 x 8 Countersunk screws to mount the motor plates.

6x M5 x 50 Screws and nuts for the roller mounts.

2x M3 x 30 screw and nuts to support the belts at the hotend. I think I took these off the tronxy belt system.

Need 2x 608 Bearings

Wiring

I Added grounding for the whole frame, bed, and PSU. Stock PSU has non-existing grounding which is not safe. Mounting for the MCU, Pi4, and PSU has changed. I managed to keep the stock ribbon cable and connector boards. Changes were avoided as much as possible but several wires need to be extended:

-Bed power and temp wires.

-Z stepper wires.

MCU

Finished RPi4+Octopus V1.1 install and tune with Klipper. Started with cheap A4988 drivers. Later Installed TMC 2209 drivers made a huge difference. X/Y steppers running 32 microsteps everything else at 16 microsteps.

Dual independent Z is a huge convenience to prevent bed tilt. Plus with Klipper Z-tilt can be calibrated automatically with the touch sensor.

Belts/Rollers

9mm GT2 belt and geared and smooth rollers. These are what I used but you can get better parts if you want.

Linear Rails

I really liked atiszoft's tronxy x5 linear rail upgrade but wanted to make it better. In addition, all of his instructions and part names are in Hungarian. I renamed the files in English and attempted to improve the hotend mount and maximize the Z-axis. The X gantry is shifted above the X-Y Plane and the rail is now in plane with the belts.

I recommend you measure your rail lengths. depending on your version of the Tronxy x5 the frame can be different sizes. I have an x5sa-400 and needed:

2x 500mm long MGN12H Rails

1x 550mm long MGN12H Rails

Again you can get better ones.

For these rails M3 T-nuts with short socket head cap screws worked the best.

Extruder

I integrated the stock filament switch and stock extruder but the extruder is just bad and filament slips past the hobb. I changed it to and older style none geared extruder.

Hotend

Includes belt attachment slots. The slots are reinforced with M3 x 30 screws. A slot at the top allows M3 flat nuts to be dropped into the center of the part. An Ender 3 aluminum v6 mount is then attached to the base.

Made out of ASA could be PETG maybe PLA. No supports. Print orientation is with the top on the print bed.

V6 mount: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09MLHNFHQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Using Stock Estops & BQ Micro touch.

5015 Fans for the cold side and part cooling. Still working on the part cooling duct work. The current design works decent enough.
