If you use the gauge that with X mm scale then you will cut strips with the with of the gauge (left picture).
If you use the gauge without blade thickness, then you will cut away xx mm from your wood (Right picture).
You can also combine it to create precise slots.
Leaf 5mm with the left setting and cut away 10mm with the right setup and you get a 5mm slot.
Note: My blade creates slots of 1.2mm so that's the difference between the widths of the gauge. The digits have been painted with permanent marker.
Update: With the second gauge you can dial in the blade distance from both sides, thus it works independent from the blade width.
