Tardigrades, also known as water bears or moss piglets, are one of the most extraordinary creatures on Earth, demonstrating a virtually unparalleled resilience. These microscopic animals, which measure between 0.3 to 0.5 mm on average, have been discovered everywhere, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountain peaks. Their most fascinating characteristic, however, is their incredible ability to survive extreme conditions. Tardigrades can withstand temperatures as low as -272 degrees Celsius (just one degree above absolute zero) and as high as 150 degrees Celsius. They can survive pressure six times greater than that found in the deepest ocean trenches, radiation doses far beyond what most organisms can tolerate, and even the vacuum of outer space. Furthermore, in response to extreme environmental stress, tardigrades can enter a state of cryptobiosis—essentially suspending their metabolism and reducing their water content to 1%—and remain in this state for decades, reviving when conditions become more favorable. This level of resilience is still the subject of much scientific investigation, with the hope of unveiling secrets that could be applied to various scientific fields, from medicine to space travel.
