FlexiDinos Bertha the flexi Pterodactyl print in place articulated dinosaur

My third flexi dino model. This time it's a Pterodactyl, as Pteranodons don't have teeth. Duh.

EDIT 29. 12. 2025: updated the model with a better leg joint and wigglier tongue.

After the long extinct Günther and Theobald I needed to make another flexi dino quick, for the current contest. Luckily I had one neglected in the basement already (according to tradition here). So I dragged her out and finished her up. As I got such positive vibes for Theobalds mouth I decided to make that a thing. Tongue should flap out easily.

Her full name is “Bertha Felicita Freifrau von Sutanto, geborene Gräfin von Kinsky” so you better bow before her or she will bite your head off. She was named by one of my lovely supporters. If you want a chance to name my next dinosaur you should become a Club Member!

Fig. A: Why other joints suck

I had to develop a new type of joint here, because I wanted them not to be parallel to the bed to give me more options in designing the wings. These new joints are not interlinked as in the usual models. They are merely two cones going into the adjacent body.

Fig. B: Why these rule

The second advantage over the previous method is the possibility to print the model really small without having to pay attention to the thickness of the links. One of my design goals in the dinosaurs is always to be able to print them fast and small, as I hand them out to everyone I meet (Yeah, creepy playground-“uncle”-style).

There is even a third advantage: the distance between start and endpoints of the joint doesn't matter as there is no need for bridging. That's a huge benefit for lazy guys like me who don't want to tune their settings.

I just managed to print her at 50% with a .6 nozzle and even the tongue keeps kinda in place:

<– Please also note the layers on top of the wings follow the joints instead of just going straight ahead as a lazy designer would do it. Yes, I'm a nerd.

Designers note:

There may be some iterations in the future as I am not completely happy with the outer joints of the wings yet but I'm in a bit of a hurry and this means reconstructing a major part of the model. I have to do a lot of work in my main job at the moment but want to enter the contest, so stay tuned for updates when I have more time in the next few weeks. This is usually not the quality I strive for when I publish a model. But perfection takes another 1-2 weeks of tinkering which I don't have at the moment.

Edit:

I just uploaded a model with flexi legs. As some of you amazing guys provided feedback, that the upward flexiness of the outer wings makes the model posable as walking, I decided to keep this happy little mistake. But to improve the effect the legs have to touch the ground. So I added a joint here. I haven't printed the new version yet but hope it works. I might still add some improvements in the next days.

Another Edit (Jan 2025):

Switched the option of supporting me on Patreon to becoming a club member.

Happy printing and lemme see your makes!

I can't stress this enough, so I'm going to write it down here: FlexiDinos are in no way suitable for small children. Parts can break off and leave sharp edges, so make sure your children are old enough to know what they're doing before letting them play with FlexiDinos!
