That is my first prototype of a kinetic sculpture/mobile… with a 90mm Earth, 70mm Moon and either a 70mm Venus, Mars or Pluto.
That results in a scale of
1 : 141.733.333,3 cm for the Earth
1 : 49.631.428,6 cm for the Moon (of Earth)
1 : 96.742.857,14 cm for Mars
1 : 172.914.285,71 cm for Venus
1 : 33.814.285,77 cm for Pluto
If I calculated everything correctly….and only if…no guarantees.
Each mobile can be packed in a unique box (see .ai files).
The rods/beams and clips/shifters can be used to set them into equilibrium, as each filament is slightly differing in weight a fixed position didn't work...
The rods are labeled with the names of the celestial bodies (in German & English).
I used rubber strings to connect all of the elements together, should work with normal strings as well, I simple liked the bouncy effect ;) .
Made with the topography maps/images from the USGS Astrology Science Center.
The heightmap data of Pluto was not complete at the time of “planet” generation, that is the reason why it looks like a partly peeled egg… and I find that extremely amusing :)
And yes - in case you were wondering - when I was born, Pluto was still a planet.
