I spent two months making all 13 Keys from the Golden Vault and now I'm sharing them!

I was inspired by the beautiful art work in the adventure book and I thought it would be really fun to have real keys to hand to my friends! I have printed several as gifts for my fellow DMs as well!

The first key I made was the Murkmire Malevolence. I made the base key template and added a mimic mouth. I knew the rest of the keys would be more difficult and for several it was less about duplicating the exact are and more about getting the same concept or expression across. Because I have not yet learned Blender, and I wanted these done sooner, I challenged myself to make all the keys using just Tinkercad with resources from Thingiverse and Printables. It was a bit like kitbashing and I really enjoyed finding the right models to make each key.

The rest of the keys I knew I could make in just Tinkercad. These include the keys for Prisoner 13, Tockworths Clockworks, Party at Paliset, Vidorants Vault, and the one I'm proudest of: the Concordant Express key. I feel like I really nailed the details on most of these keys.

With all that in mind, please note these models aren't perfect, but they are printable. I have printed all 13 keys on my Ender 3 in gold PLA.  I have printed them at 100% and 75% and I think they look great!  At 100% they make a nice hefty prop that looks impressive in your hand. At 75% they're a bit more economical and you can fit more of them on your buildplate without loosing too much detail and still being relatively key-sized.  I have not printed them in resin but I'm sure they'd be pretty cool looking without layer lines! Please share a make if you do!

I strove to make the keys printable without supports as much as possible! For 11 of the keys I was successful. If you have trouble with any overhangs on the no-support keys, just turn on “make overhangs printable” as any overhangs are not crucial to those designs.

Two keys DO need supports: Axe From the Grave and Stygian Gambit.

  • Axe is oriented as it should be printed, skull facing up. Use simple supports touching build plate only and it should print fine. If your printer is good at bridging, you can do tree supports instead just around the spine and jaw.
  • Stygian is a little more complex, it does better with tree/organic supports to support the orb and horns and a bit of the underside of the wings.

Thanks everyone that voiced their support for this project when I first posted pics! I hope you and your players enjoy these, please share your makes!
