First off, I am only using Klipper so I know nothing of Marlin. All my config examples are meant for Klipper only. But you can use the values to adjust your settings in Marlin.

This bracket is a (near) drop-in replacement for the original bracket. I had to add a ridge to make the bracket stiff enough. This means that you can use any filament type you like, regardless of how rigid or stiff the material is

I have also added a spacer that lifts the build plate about 1cm (meaning the print height is reduced from 400mm to 390mm; in Klipper, decrease the position_max value by 10mm, mine had to go from 405 to 395). The reason for the lift is to allow for attachments (like a bed cable strain relief) to be placed between the plate and the bearer mounts.

The leadscrew can be fastened the same way it is on the original bracket. Or if you use an anti-backlash nut, the screws can go in from below and the nuts on top (at least for my TR8x2 I couldn't fit the nuts underneath so I turned them around)

To fasten the bearer mounts, either use a set of 8 M4 heat-set insert at the bottom or replace the screws with (at least) M4*12 screws and fasten with M4 nuts. If you use the riser, you can us something like M4*24 (I myself used M4*30 because I couldn't find the M4*24)

The bearer frame mounts do NOT have to be removed. Just loosen the bearer rods from the mounts to replace the bracket

You can use the brackets:

  • for Dual Z drives: with the default setup of 2 Z motors in the center of the brackets
  • for Tripple Z drives: 1 Z motor on one side in the center of the bracket and 2 Z motors on the outer positions on the other side
  • for Quad Z drives: 2 Z motors on the outer positions on both sides

Positions of the center of the leadscrews:

  • X
    •  -18.4
    • +378.4
  • Y
    • +74.4
    • +180
    • +285.6

So for Klipper, the z_position value for the z_tilt section will be (facing the front of the printer):

  • Dual Z: 1 left, 1 right
z_positions: -18.4,180
  378.4,180
  • Tripple Z: 1 left, 2 right:
z_positions: -18.4,180
  378.4,285.6
  378.4,74.4
  • Tripple Z: 2 left, 1 right:
z_positions: -18.4,74.4
  -18.4,285.6
  378.4,180
  • Quad Z: 2 left, 2 right
z_positions: -18.4,74.4
  -18.4,285.6
  378.4,285.6
  378.4,74.4

I printed the bracket in the pictures with PLA (Jupiter PLA (123-3D.nl)) (25% infill). When printed top-side down, there is no need for supports.

So far, I have successfully replaced one of the brackets and for now I am using Dual Z-drive but things are looking good enough for me to publish this bracket in the hopes I can help others and get feedback on my design.

Updates

2023-05-22 Added “(Rigid V2.1 - Flat)” version. Added some text at the bottom so it is clear to which side the build plate should go and what the bottom of the object is once it is printed.

2023-05-22 Added “(Rigid V2 - Flat)” version. Initial tests looked promising but it turned out, the rigidity was not yet optimal. So I added some more ridges and crosses underneath in the hope this will improve rigidity. (Weight will not be an issues since the original bracket weighs MUCH more than this one) (New pictures will be added later)

2023-07-19 Added some pictures showing my tripple-Z axis setup and my z-motor mounting brackets (https://www.printables.com/model/496472-z-axis-stepper-motor-mount-plate-for-2020-frame)
