WIP: The current uploaded model is the model as a whole. will be uploading the parts soon. it is not tested for print as is but meant to printed in parts.
This is a low poly model of a traditional Maldivian Fishing Vessel. The current hull was designed over centuries with traditional build methods tools and material. Called A Dhoni or Mas Odi (ones that were specifically built for fishing tuna and other fish) in local tongue (Dhivehi) is a masterclass in boat building.
This is an attempt to keep alive the tradition of boat building in the Maldives. Master builders would carry the build plans in their head which they learnt from a previous master builder under an apprenticeship.Builders would use previously abundantly coconut trees cured in the shallows of the beach. For nails iron wood found on the beach would be used. Compartments to keep the the fish stock fresh, for bait and tools would be spaced around the hull where each crew would be located and doing their part to fill the decks using pole and line only.
The idea is to develop a self build model that would come in parts for kids to build. A build guide with a history of the vessel, with detailed about the build process, tools and materials with photos is also planned.
Using 3d Printing to translate traditional design practices, history and culture.
The author marked this model as their own original creation.
