This is a remix of the great spool ring design by SpectreGadget made for the Inland and Overture cardboard spools. There are clips in the inner bore of the spool that hold the ring securely in place, as well as pegs toward the outer brim that press into the holes meant to hold the filament end. This makes the ring very secure without needing to be glued to the spool, so it can be reused of a new spool when the first runs out. I am thinking up some provisions to improve upon this design and address the lack of place to put the end of the filament now that the holes are occupied without needing a special separate clip… coming at a later time.
I printed in eSun PETG for heat resistance while drying the filament, but PLA should work fine for day to day use in the AMS.
Disclaimer: The dimensions of the Polymaker spools do not seem to be as tightly held as the Inland and Overture spool. These fit beautifully on one of my two Polymaker spools, and on one side of the other, but one half of the second spool seems to be off by about 1 mm on one of the ‘filament holder’ holes. (I swapped the rings to verify that something didn't cause that particular ring to be off… It's definitely the spool.) I was still able to press the post in, but it is a bit wonky. With only two spools to test it on, I cannot conclude if this is a minor fluke, or if counting on Polymaker spools to be consistent (enough) to fit is not going to work. Feel free to make it and post your results. Hope this helps! :)
