First of many little coffee projects of mine, the flow control disk for Varia VS3 coffee grinder. Simple upgrade, nothing more.

It regulates the flow of beans into the grinder (ensures a better grind distribution), reduces “popcorning” and also reduces the stress on the grinder motor itself.

Layer height: 0.15
Perimeters: 2 (or more, you do you)
PETG for stronger and less brittle prints

  1. Make sure that the Varia VS3 is unplugged.
  2. Remove the magnetic cap on top of the chamber, and also the one around it with an arrow symbol on it.
  3. Remove the hopper by rotating counter clockwise until it becomes free from the thread.
(While at this point, you can also clean your grinder, since you already opened it up. We both know you haven’t done it in a while right?)
  4. Next, carefully remove the small ring bearing that is visible on the top of the burr housing.
  5. Using a wrench, spanner or socket wrench fixed to the inner burr set screw, gently rotate clockwise to loosen the inner burr set screw. Remove the scre with its washers.
  6. Install your brand-new 3D printed flow control disk inside and by rotating counter clockwise secure it in place.
  7. Reassemble the set screw with is washer in place, as shown in the pictogram up above. Do not over tighten, these should be tight but not over tightened.
  8. Next replace the bearing back into the centre of the outer burr housing.
  9. Place the hopper back and tighten to the “zero set point” as per the grinder adjustment and calibration instructions in your included manual.
  10. Make some coffee, It’s about time.

Pro barista tip
If you fuse your brand-new 3D printed flow control disk with already included anti popcorning rubber thing, it creates this anti-popcorning flow control beast of a moded machine (as shown in the last picture).
This allows you to directly feed your coffee in an already turned on machine, since the two components kill the popcorning issue. That also greatly helps with more even grind disttribution and longevity of your machine. Neat!
