Linear Rails Mod for Prusa Mini MK3S Bear.
I wanted to try out linear rails for my Prusa Mini Bear mod, and while there are a few sources here and there, they were not exactly what I was looking for.
I wanted something simple to source (I used 5x MGN-12 linear rails with a pretty “standard” length of 300mm, sourced them from https://www.robotdigg.com/product/1314/Black-anodized-linear-rail-7,-9,-12-and-15 - Thank you Voron Team for the sourcing guide!) as I don't have tools to easily cut rails (although you could get them cut to size by the vendor) and something that still resembles Bear Mod.
I would also like to thank https://www.youtube.com/@jotheripper2 for his work, I used his CAD model as a source for my mod - the z-motor mounts are still 100% his design. However everything else is quite a bit modified. I also opted to use 2 MGN-12 rails for Y-axis instead of a single wider Y-rail, because I did not want to modify the mounting. The Y-axis screws in directly into the MGN-12 carrier, the holes align perfectly :)
It works quite nicely, no more grinding sounds, everything slides smoothly whilst being very rigid.
What you need:
- 5x MGN-12 300mm linear rails (1 for X, 2 for Y and 2 for Z)
- a few square nuts (I think you need 13, but buy more, they are always useful :D): 1 for each y-rail holder, 2 for x-rail ends (I used them to lock the y-rail into place by tensioning it with some screws), 2 for the idler holder, 5 (I think) for the x-axis carrier
- a bunch of M3 screws of different lengths - I'm sorry, I don't have an exact number. You need them for: securing the motors, securing the MGN carriers, securing the rails and everything else
- a bunch of M3 hex nuts, you need them for.. lots of places :D
- M3 T-nuts to secure the Z-rails in place. I printed them because my Aliexpress order did not arrive and I was impatient. I used this model, it worked great.
- the x-axis belt path is a bit longer than the one on the standard Bear Mod, so you might need a longer one (1m is more than enough). I used one that it was lying around, I think it was the original X-axis belt from the mini.
I think that's it. I hope I don't forget anything :D
This mod is based on the Prusa MK3S Bear Mod - thanks to the awesome Grégoire Saunier.
Also huge thanks to pear3d.ch and Tomson for their work on the Prusa Mini MK3S Bear mod, they made all this possible.
It can be used on the MK3S+ as well, you'd need different size rails, though.
As always, .step files are included.
The author remixed this model.
