I made my first one from wood years before I got a 3D printer. This one is made from a wood PLA filament. The base and top part are wood PLA with 20% infill. The adjusting knob is standard PLA at 100% infill. The stem is ½ wooden dowel which can be purchased at a craft, lumber or department store. The magnet I used is from a blue Harbor Freight work light that I used for other projects for the file Holder Top.stl. For a 20mm x 3mm Neodymiun magnet use Holder Top 20mm.stl. Everything was designed with TinkerCad.
The hole in the base is a press fit for the dowel. Best to measure dowel and hole for fit, if dowel is to big sand diameter down a little. If it is too small there is a small hole in the bottom for a #4 wood screw. The top part should slide freely on dowel and takes little pressure from the knob to tighten it on dowel. I have seen three different magnets on the work light. Two are glued in and need to be knocked out from the back. The third has a metal cover with tabs to twist on the inside to release. These tabs need to be nipped off to insert.
If you use it as a suspension from the top adjust anywhere to let your tool dangle. If resting on the base, adjustment needs to be very close to the metal to keep tool from falling over. Neodymium magnets would be best if purchasing. The size in the Harbor Freight light is 18mm x 2mm. If more magnetic strength is needed just stick another magnet to the mounted one.
