Introducing the 3D model "Virus in the Third Dimension: The Art of Self-Assembly." This unique design replicates the biological process of viral self-assembly by using 12 separate components, each requiring 10 magnets (I used 3 mm x 2 mm neodymium magnets with superglue to fix the magnets). Two magnets are placed on each face, with one having its polarity inverted.
To demonstrate the self-assembly process, place the individual pieces inside a jar or transparent sphere. As you move the container, the magnetic forces will cause the virus model to assemble itself, mimicking the way real viruses self-assemble in nature.
For those without a background in biology, self-assembly is a process where molecules and cells spontaneously organize themselves into functional structures. In the case of viruses, their protein components come together to form the virus's outer shell, or capsid, without any external guidance. This 3D model provides an engaging and interactive way to visualize and understand this fascinating biological phenomenon.
