A low profile cap the Neutrik XX-series XLR connectors, fits both male and female.
3mm right angle cable outlet (indexable every 90 degrees), builds 5mm on top of the connectors resulting in 24mm for a male and 29mm for a female.
Press-fits in the connector - they can be removed by pushing from inside the XLR, but I would consider them mostly permanent.
