Star Trek and chess fans know that the Classic Chess Set and the Sculptured Chess Set by artist Peter Ganine are the chess pieces displayed on the tri-dimensional chess board in Star Trek: The Original Series. The Star Trek pilot episode used a different chess set, but I've never identified that set.
The Star Fleet Technical Manual, first released in 1975, contains a two-page spread on Tri-Dimensional Chess, including blueprints for the design of chess pieces used on the tri-dimensional chess board. This chess set is a faithful reproduction of the chess pieces given in the blueprints.
The design in the technical manual follows the general style of the Ganine Classic Chess Set design but does not reproduce it. I assume this is to avoid copyright issues. Nevertheless, this is a fun chess set to display and play. If you can build a tri-dimensional chess board (here is a link, and another link, to some here at Printables), this set would still be historically accurate in place of the Ganine Classic Chess Set.
I release my chess set 3D models so that others may enjoy playing the game of chess with something other than standard Staunton chess pieces (see license below). These 3D models are meant for an individual's personal use. Individuals are permitted to print sets to give away (no exchange of value between parties), provided the appropriate attribution is included with the gift set. Any commercial printing or distribution is strictly prohibited. Please don't make me wake up my lawyer; she's grumpy when she doesn't get her beauty sleep, and you will suffer the consequences.
The author marked this model as their own original creation.
